Discover how to see beyond the veil/Matrix that hides us from our soul purpose. These are 8 signs you're having a spiritual awakening.
Do you feel like you are on the brink of huge changes? Does it feel like everything around you is shifting, or about to? Well... you might be on the verge of a spiritual awakening!
What is Spiritual Awakening?
A person who has not been exposed to their spiritual side may not know or feel connected to their true purpose in life, their dharma. (Dharma is one of my favorite words!)
Spiritual awakening is a state of being that helps us see beyond what our eyes can see. It helps you understand the basics of your human existence, the nature of the universe, and opens you up to these truths about life. We live our lives thinking that things are one way. That we need to achieve A, B and C to be happy. But worldly/material things cannot make us happy for long. They are part of the human experience, but they are not holders of happiness. True happiness and purpose does not come from the outside; it is within you. You are BORN with it. And to find it, all you need to do is look inside yourself.
There are three stages of spiritual awakening.
The first stage will help you feel comfortable and still in your surroundings. It will allow you to live in the present without worrying about what will happen in the future, or ruminating on what happened in the past.
In the second stage, you establish a deep connection with your earthly environment. You can find joy in the most ordinary things in life, feel a spiritual connection to nature, and appreciate everything.
The third stage of enlightenment leads you to believe that you are the same as the things around you. You are “everything” and “everything” is within you.
Spiritual awakening can be achieved by anyone. Each of us is unique in our approaches to all things spiritual, so the ways we get there may differ. But here are some tools that may help YOU on this journey.
1. Let go of the self.
We often cling to our identity, and "who we are" in this world. The more we can release that idea and become a conscious observer of the experience we are having, rather than a fully active participant... the easier this spiritual awakening will be.
2. Honesty with yourself and where you are.
Being true to yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do on your spiritual journey. Acknowledge all parts of you. The "good", the "bad"... try to look at it all. You will learn how to make peace with it over time.
3. Fear is not your friend.
Of course we are afraid of things in this life... we are human. But as you made piece with your shadow side, so you must make peace with your fears. Look them right in the eye. Acknowledge them. And then allow yourself to move through them, one at a time.
4. Forgiveness is one of your most powerful tools.
You can get hurt by others, and you can hold them accountable for your despair. More than that, you can hold YOURSELF accountable for every mistake you've ever made in your life. Let that go. Forgiving yourself and others will open the door to the most powerful healing you've ever experienced. (One of my favorite tools for this is the Hawaiian Ho 'oponopono prayer)
5. Releasing attachment to material desires.
Money and material things are all TOOLS to have an experience here on Earth, and I am all about manifesting and desiring them. They can help us live out soul driven scenarios in life. HOWEVER, when we become too attached to them that we lose sight of our soul purpose, our true self, and our deepest heart... we lost sight of spirit. So I love to practice aparigraha here, or "non-grasping". This is one of the yamas and is a beautiful practice. You can read more about it here.
6. Meditation
There are many different ways to meditate. You can take a course and learn various tools on how to do this. But at it's essence... meditation is focused awareness. You sit (or lie down) and intentionally find a point of focus. Whether the focus is your breath or the sound of the air conditioner, you spend several minutes in stillness and quiet just focusing on that. You'll be surprised what comes up!
Now, on to the Eight Signs of Spiritual Awakening
1. Changes in Your Behavior
One sure sign of spiritual awakening is seen in our daily actions. Compulsive and addictive behavior are all signs that point towards a stagnation. When you start to change these behaviors, or even just feel the desire to do so, you can be sure you're on your way to an awakening. No need to rush it... follow the nudges and take the baby steps. You'll look back in 6 months and be amazed.
2. More Emotional Balance
Repressed emotional traumas definitely get in the way of your spiritual awakening. By becoming aware of and healing emotional trauma from your past, you can heal those wounds and connect to your truest self. This will start to affect every area of your life.
3. Increased Self Awareness
You start to notice your patterns and behaviors in this world more. You're much more aware of how your actions affect you and those around you. You reflect on your past and see how it affects your now. Reflection is a powerful way to access repressed memories of the unconscious mind, which often manifests into our current behavior. This introspection isn’t meant to judge, condemn, or criticize. Our soul is neutral and curious. You'll notice that you're more neutral and curious in your day to day life.
4. Your Priorities and Values Start To Change
You start to question your belief systems, and allow yourself to look at everything in a broader way. Also, earthly desires that don't serve your highest self (such as drinking, drugs, unhealthy relationships, etc) start to be re-evaluated. The changes will take time, but the awareness is there. This is a sure sign.
5. A Deeper Connection with Your Inner Self
Another sign of spiritual awakening is a transition from the external world to the inner realm of thoughts, emotions, dreams, and imagination. In Buddhism, this dimension is called the subtle world and is considered more real than the waking state. You shift from the Matrix, and start to uncover what is behind the veil.
6. A Deeper Understanding of Opposite Forces
Most of us have a rather stubborn, fundamentalist mind that sees things in black and white.
To avoid confusion, we block out one side and exclusively identify with the other. And while duality is part of the human experience, identifying too strongly with it serves to keep us bound in the Matrix. With our spiritual awakening, we start to let these dualities go, and again... approach everything with curiosity and observation.
7. We Chase Our Dharma
When you start finding more power from the inside, there is a willingness to be radically more honest. We shed our inhibitions, our fear, our insecurities, as we chase our dharma.
8. We Shift and Change How We Live
Another sign of spiritual awakening is that you start to be very careful with your lifestyle choices. Many of the “normal” things we used to do are now unacceptable. It's almost as though you can no longer tolerate the old behavior that no long aligns with where you're going.
The Causes of Spiritual Awakening
Spiritual Awakening is a process that can be triggered by anything that makes you question the very root of who you are. What are some common triggers?
Triggers can be traumatic experiences, but also can be every day events that beg us to ask questions.
As a result, we start looking for answers. We often seek answers to the unknown when we have very painful experiences.
It turns out that almost every spiritual awakening is accompanied by some kind of suffering or inner turmoil that begs us to find help and make a change.
How Long Does a Spiritual Awakening Last?
A spiritual awakening is an experience that isn’t a race, or something that is defined by time. You may experience this for the length of your life. You may have lots of little awakenings, one after the other.
